Advisory board offers networking for student journalists

ASNE’s Youth Journalism Initiative is looking for high school journalists to join its student advisory board.

The program, started last year, enables students to influence ASNE’s outreach and to network with other student journalists from across the country. In addition to offering ideas for programs, contests and activities, members will participate in regularly scheduled discussions through social media.

Participants will shape the focus of the group based on their needs and experiences and can pick and choose the activities that most interest them.

“Participating in the Student Advisory Board was a wonderful experience,” Annie Schugart, a member of last year’s board, said in an email. “I had the opportunity to participate in a White House press call, which was something I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. I was participating in the press call right alongside professional journalists, and because of this, it enabled me to develop professional journalism skills.”

Although applications are accepted on a rolling basis, students are encouraged to apply by the end of September so they will be able to participate in the group’s first Twitter chat, to be held in October.

The application and more information is available online at schooljournalism.org/schools/advisory-board/.
