NAMLE set to celebrate global connectivity at annual conference

The National Association for Media Literacy Education is hosting its annual conference June 26 and 27 in Philadelphia. NAMLE will host a special news literacy themed kick-off event on the evening of June 25 where a panel will discuss the film “Merchants of Doubt.” Based off a book of the same name, the film takes a look inside the culture of doubt and how journalists cover certain issues, such as global climate change. The panel will include Alan Miller, president and CEO of the News Literacy Project, and Kelly McBride, vice president of academic programs at Poynter.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Celebrating Connectivity Across Cultures.” NAMLE Executive Director Michelle Ciulla Lipkin said the conference is a valuable opportunity for an eclectic group of educators to come together to discuss news literacy.

“If you’re an educator or someone interested in 21st-century education, it’s an amazing conference because it brings together so many people from different disciplines,” Lipkin said.

The conference, part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, boasts nearly 40 different panels, including a few focused entirely on civic engagement and news literacy. Lipkin said anyone and everyone is invited to attend.

NAMLE, formerly Alliance for a Media Literate America, is a national membership organization dedicated to advancing the field of media literacy education.
