Quill and Scroll 2014 contest winners announced

The awards for Quill and Scroll’s 2014 International Photo and Writing Competition and Blogging Competition were posted on the Quill and Scroll website today. Congratulations to the 16 sweepstakes winners for finishing first in their division, as well as the six winners in the blogging competition!

The professional journalists who served as judges reviewed the 2,211 entries in this year’s contest and selected 328 winners. With an individual victory under their belt, students are eligible to apply for one of two Quill and Scroll-sponsored scholarships during their final year of high school. Last year, eight seniors planning to study journalism in college received scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 each.

“The entries in every category are always impressive, but this year’s investigative submissions were especially good,” said Quill and Scroll Executive Director Vanessa Shelton. “Students also put together interesting blogs that expertly dealt with impressive topics.”

The 2014 contest, sponsored by ASNE’s Youth Journalism Initiative, which manages SchoolJournalism.org, included a separate blogging competition for the second year in a row and two new additions to the photo and writing competition: multimedia features and photo slideshows. Shelton said regularly adding new elements to the competition encourages high school journalists to stay abreast of developments in the field and to pursue a professional level of excellence.

“The contest gives students a chance to measure what they are doing compared to other high school journalists,” Shelton said. “Recognition from winning can also provide an advantage in college admission and give them a boost in their future careers.”
