Summer workshops offer more learning opportunities for student journalists and teachers

School may soon be out for summer, but there are plenty of opportunities for students and teachers to enhance their journalism skills in the summer months. Every summer, many programs are held at the state and regional level by state scholastic press associations and universities. Here’s a rundown of excellent summer opportunities for aspiring journalists, teachers and advisers:

National and regional camps for students:

  • AAJA’s JCamp, an intensive, multicultural journalism training for high school students. The Asian American Journalists Association is hosting the camp at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. August 1-6. Anyone may apply by the March 13, 2016 deadline.
  • Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference
    The Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference each year selects one high school junior from every state and the District of Columbia to participate in an all-expenses-paid summer journalism conference at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Participants also receive a $1,000 college scholarship.
  • The Columbia Scholastic Press Association will hold its 34th annual Summer Journalism Workshop, on the historic campus of Columbia University in the City of New York.
  • The Digital Media Academy  program at several locations offers hands-on learning for students in the areas of digital photography and Photoshop, Web design, animation and video.
  • iD Tech Camps offers web design, photography and digital video summer courses held at over 60 prestigious universities including Stanford, Princeton, and others nationwide.
  • iD Visual Arts Academy offers two week, teen summer courses in documentary film making and professional photography at NYU, UC Berkeley and Yale University. Project-based learning taught by adult-only, trained instructors.
  • MediaNow STL in St. Louis, Missouri is a four day summer boot camp for high school journalism teachers and students that aims to take your digital media skills to the next level, for the upcoming school year and beyond. MediaNow offers workshops in web, multimedia, photography, design, social media, broadcast, editor training and much more. Scholarships and Housing are available.
  • MediaNowDrake in Des Moines, Iowa is a four day summer boot camp for high school journalism teachers and students that aims to take your digital media skills to the next level, for the upcoming school year and beyond. Our camp at Drake University will offer courses in editorial leadership, InDesign, writing, yearbook, web/social and photo/multimedia. Scholarships and Housing are available.
  • For a real-world journalism experience, register for the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop held at the Missouri School of Journalism, Thanks to a generous grant from the Dow Jones Fund the 2016 workshop will be held from July 9-17.
  • Newsroom by the Bay is heading into its 6th year, with 80 students a year from around the world, who gather for one week at Stanford to explore digital storytelling, multimedia production, WordPress-based publishing and real-life reporting. Students go on daylong reporting trips to San Francisco and in Silicon Valley. It will be held June 26 to July 3.
  • The New England Center for Investigative Reporting at Boston University is offering a two-week Summer Investigative Reporting Workshop with three sessions beginning on June 27, July 11, and July 25. The workshop is an opportunity for high school students to improve their writing, research, and critical thinking skills while working with award-winning reporters on their own investigative piece. Students will live on BU’s campus and participate in evening and weekend activities exploring Boston.

  • Register now for the Academy of Scholastic Broadcasting 2016 Teacher Workshop in Springfield, Missouri.
