Students will be introduced to writing for broadcasting.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Level 1 (Basic) understanding of writing for broadcasting
  2. Level 2 (Proficient) application of writing for broadcasting

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. Broadcast News Writing PowerPoint Day 1
  2. Guided Writing: Reporting Live Guide
  3. Various nursery rhymes or fairy tales. You will need enough for each student to have a different one.

VERIFICATION

Steps to check for student understanding

  1. Teacher will do frequent comprehension checks in the form of Classroom Assessment Techniques (thumbs up, thumbs down; exit slip in the form of post-it note summary).
  2. Students will write and present Reporting Live in class – teacher may want to grade using presentation rubric

FLOW OF LESSON

  1. Suggested bell ringer: What is one thing that people do when they are speaking that drives you crazy? Why do you think it bothers you so much?
  2. Teacher will present the Broadcast News Writing Day 1 PowerPoint presentation.
  3. Teacher will distribute the nursery rhymes or fairy tales.
  4. Teacher will distribute the Reporting Live Guide to students.
  5. Teacher will loosely guide students as they turn their nursery rhymes or fairy tales into a broadcast report.
  6. Teacher will have students present as if they are reporting “live” from the scene.

  1. Exit slip: If you could have covered any event in history, what event would you have covered live and why?
