Searchlights and Sunglasses prepares students for the future of journalism

Eric Newton presented updates to his free digital journalism book, Searchlights and Sunglasses, at the recent Green Shoots in Journalism conference hosted by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri.

“No one who teaches young people knows what the future of journalism will be, and if they say they do, don’t believe them,” said Newton, senior adviser to the president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. “Young people will grow up and shape it. They will determine its future.” Newton is known for his commitment to studying how technology has and will continue to change journalism.

Searchlights and Sunglasses focuses on how the digital age has shaped journalism in the 21st century and provides lesson plans and other resources in addition to its interactive textbook platform. Because the tool is digital, Newton is able to ensure that it continues to present the latest innovations and information.

The Green Shoots in Journalism conference highlighted developments in journalism education with presentations by faculty and students from colleges and universities around the country. Watch the recorded sessions here.
